Local Veteran Launches First-Ever Dive Rescue Team in East Texas

Colmesneil, TX — In a region dotted with lakes, rivers, and flood-prone roads, a startling reality has long gone unaddressed: East Texas has no certified dive rescue team. That’s something retired U.S. Army Infantry Lieutenant Colonel and Bronze Star recipient Michael King is determined to change — with help from the community.

King, a PADI-certified scuba instructor and owner of Excite Scuba LLC, has launched a grassroots campaign to build and equip East Texas' first Dive Rescue & Recovery Team. The mission? Provide rapid-response support for water-related emergencies including drownings, flood rescues, submerged vehicles, and search-and-recovery efforts for local law enforcement and first responders.

“When every second counts, East Texans deserve more than a waiting game. Our team will be trained, equipped, and ready to respond,” says King, who brings over 35 years of real-world dive and rescue experience to the effort.

Despite the area's proximity to Lake Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, and dozens of rivers and reservoirs, current emergency responders often lack the dive capabilities needed for underwater recovery or swift water rescues — putting both victims and first responders at risk.

The Plan and the Need

Excite Scuba’s fundraising goal of $4,500 is part of a larger $25,000 initiative to launch and sustain the team. Funds will go toward:

  • Rescue gear: lift bags, dry suits, oxygen kits

  • Training: Public Safety Diver certification for 6+ personnel

  • Operations: Equipment trailer, storage, team branding, and outreach

The team will be based in Colmesneil, TX, but serve across Tyler County and beyond.

Why It Matters

  • Veteran-led leadership from a decorated Army officer

  • Local expertise from the only scuba training provider within 50 miles

  • Community-focused mission, including CPR education and responder partnerships

As King explains, “This isn’t just about diving. It’s about saving lives, supporting first responders, and training the next generation of public safety divers right here in our own backyard.”
